The Communications Center is a demanding environment, where all details contribute to the success of the operation.
The Communications Center is staffed by Emergency Service Dispatchers, who are supervised by Patrol Bureau Shift Commanders. The Dispatcher's primary responsibility is the safety of police officers on the street. They are an officer's primary link for requesting help as they perform their law enforcement duties. Dispatchers typically work in several shifts daily.
Administrative and technical matters for the Center are the responsibility of a Technical Services Lieutenant.
The Dispatch Center handles all telephone and radio requests for police and fire service. Dispatchers are responsible for processing information emergency request information and formulating an appropriate Police or Fire response, as well as entering this information into the Department's Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system.
Utilizing various CAD systems, dispatchers are able to input, assign and update calls in real time. Through the use of an Enhanced 911 system, dispatchers can locate 911 callers, even if they are unable to speak.
